As a result, largely coming from the creation of social media, we live in a ‘Smart City’ encompassing an ‘Internet of Things (IoT), such as watching, sensing, moving, calibrating, warning etc’. Snap maps, a recently developed component to the popular app ‘Snap Chat’ enforces the ideologies surrounding us living in a ‘Smart City’. Snapchat allows its users to observe and access all their friends’ real-time locations, viewed through the placement of custom avatars on an interactive map of the World. Many features, similarly to Snap Maps that have been developed have proven their worth, and their support in aiding human lives. Examples being: Global Disaster Alerting Systems, providing warning for things such as natural disasters, as well as COVID-19 tracing apps, helping limit the spread of the Coronavirus. Ultimately, as new technology and similar innovations are developed it begs us to ask the question, does it’s functionality outweigh the privacy invasions that inevitably come with it?
